Willowbrook, population 24,000, is a Census Designated Place south of the 105 freeway and east of the 110 freeway in unincorporated south central Los Angeles County. Part of the 4,500 acre Rancho Tajauta land grant in 1843, the area was subdivided at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries with deep residential lots suitable for semi-rural backyard uses like growing crops and raising chickens. By the 1980s, though, Willowbrook succumbed to intense development pressure. Modern-day Willowbrook has abundant residential and commercial facilities like other communities in south central LA County. Unlike the several cities that surround it, though, the unincorporated community of Willowbrook has no local control - no Mayor, no City Council, no local police force. The Willowbrook Improvement Network is a local organization with a vision for a dynamic and sustainable future for the community and residents through intergenerational stability, economic development, and civic engagement.
